Greg was born, adopted, and raised in Reno, Nevada. Upon graduating from Reno High School, he began his military career by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. While stationed at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, he received a NROTC scholarship. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he was commissioned into the United States Navy and selected to be a pilot. Following flight training in Texas, Florida, and California, he was assigned to fly Seahawks, SH-60B helicopters. During flight school, Greg met and married his wife of 25 years, Jennifer (JJ), who is also from the Reno-Sparks area.
Greg's first duty squadron placed him in Atsugi, Japan, where he deployed to numerous countries in Southeast Asia and twice to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. Through his numerous deployments from Japan, Greg had the opportunity to learn about life numerous areas of the world.
After being stationed in Japan for over three years, Greg transferred to Pensacola, Florida to share his knowledge with numerous students as a helicopter instructor. He then moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he deployed in support of the Iraqi War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return and birth of his first daughter, Talya, he was deployed again to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
The next set of orders sent Greg and the family back to San Diego, California where the birth of his second daughter, Harlequinne (Harley) occurred. His duties temporarily placed him at Central Command Headquarters in Tampa Bay, Florida to work as a Country Officer for twelve countries in the Coalition Coordination Center division of the Plans and Policy Directorate.
After returning to San Diego, he then deployed to Southeast Asia as the Officer-in-Charge for a detachment of 23 sailors and a helicopter. His detachment visited seven different countries and received special recognition for a search and rescue mission in Malaysia.
Greg and his family remained in San Diego for his next two tours as an anti-terrorism officer and a leadership instructor. During this time, he earned his Master's degree from the Naval War College in National Strategic Planning and Policy. He retired from his Navy career with numerous personal awards, including the Joint Commendation Medal, four Navy Commendation Medals, and two Navy Achievement Medals.
During this time in San Diego, Greg and his family faced one of the most challenging experiences anyone can go through, a cancer diagnosis. Thankfully the cancer was caught early and Greg has been cancer-free for over 10 years.
After retirement Greg and his family returned home, to Reno to be close to their extended families. He now spends his days volunteering at his daughters schools and with the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program, as a ski instructor. He has taught hundreds of kids to ski. He earned a professional ski instructor certification and holds substitute teaching license. Greg has been a member of Sky Tavern's Board of Director's for five years and currently serves as the Vice Chair. He is an assistant coach for the Reno High School ski team.
